AI Pod Underbids Dev Shop by 3x: Why PE Firms Stop Shopping on Price

A PE operating partner explains why he stopped comparing AI vendors on price alone.
- A portfolio company with $15M revenue (healthcare SaaS) needed an AI research tool built on top of a 20-year-old claims platform.
- A traditional dev shop quoted $150K–$200K over roughly six months.
- The team came in as an "AI Velocity Pod": about one third of the cost, in one third of the time.
The core argument: in a PE-backed environment the buying decision isn't really about dollars. Choosing a $150K quote over a $50K one isn't fatal for a decent-sized company — but the gap between shipping in two months versus eight months changes everything, because hold periods are short. Speed, certainty and flexibility carry more weight.
