David Friedberg: Open-Source Models Make Data Centers Unnecessary for 90% of AI Use

David Friedberg argues that thanks to open-source models, 90% of everyday AI use no longer requires data centers — anyone can download for free, and run locally, what was "the most advanced technology in human history less than a year ago."
He says this basic fact should be acknowledged before entering debates about needing to "stop superintelligence" or "shut down data centers." Quoting author MarvinTBaumann adds that many basic AI features will follow autocorrect's path: running locally, invisibly, for years.
