WIRED examines the rise of AI agents as actual coworkers: startups are selling LLM-based "digital employees" that join email threads and Slack channels as chiefs of staff, engineers, and marketers. BCG partner Julie Bedard notes firms have long lacked language for AI at work — tool, teammate, or colleague? While Copilot and Gemini for Workspace launched in 2023 as employee tools, a January BCG poll of 1,261 managers found 22% of organizations have added AI agents to their org charts, a share expected to grow as dozens of agent-employee startups enter.
