The Blank Box Problem: Consumer AI Still Too Hard for Mainstream Users to Learn
viksit · x · 2026-09-28
Josh Elman's "Blank Box Problem" argument, amplified by viksit as the "blinking cursor problem":
- Nearly every consumer AI product opens to an empty text field with a few sample prompts. The message is "ask anything" — but users must already know what to ask.
- That's a steep onboarding barrier for an industry trying to bring a transformative technology to hundreds of millions of mainstream users.
- Some products go further and ask users to connect email, calendar, social accounts, finances and health data. Useful eventually, but a huge trust request made before users understand what they'll get back.
The takeaway: consumer AI can't mainstream on a blank box — products need fundamentally better onboarding and value demonstration.
