Gamification expert Yu-kai Chou: AI retention is a motivation design problem
TheMoonMidas · x · 2026-09-28
Yu-kai Chou, creator of the Octalysis Framework, argues most teams treat AI as a day-one magic trick — by day ten the model still works, but users have stopped caring.
He frames this as a motivation design gap. Day-one wow usually comes from Core Drive 7 (Unpredictability & Curiosity), which fades on its own schedule. What keeps users engaged in week two is a reason that outlasts the surprise: a goal they care about, or a result they shaped themselves and want to keep improving.
