Don't Wait for Grad School: How to Build an AI Governance Portfolio as an Undergrad

An AI governance practitioner advises undergraduates to start building proof of work in AI governance/policy long before grad school.
Suggested path:
- Pick an AI tool or use case you care about, ask what could go wrong, and actually draft the policies, controls, review processes, and accountability mechanisms it needs.
- Use incidents from frontier-lab agents — safety, privacy, reliability, oversight, accountability — as case studies: write up what happened, what was missing, and how you'd design governance differently.
- Publish on LinkedIn or a blog, share with professors, and build a reputation as someone already thinking seriously about these problems.
- Reach out to people in fellowships you're targeting to learn how they positioned themselves, then apply for internships, research roles, and policy programs.
