Important AI research on a few GPUs: a case for a broad research ecosystem

Quoting Dimitris Papailiopoulos: meaningful AI basic research is possible with just a few GPUs and agent subscriptions — e.g. the ECHO paper, looped transformers, and open-source mementos for context management. Daniel Rock adds that this extends to all research: understanding AI properly will take people inside labs, downstream firms, universities, think tanks, and regulators working together.
