Google DeepMind launches DeepMind Institute to study AGI's impact on safety and society
rvp · x · 2026-09-28
Google DeepMind announced the DeepMind Institute, led by Shane Legg, James Manyika and Demis Hassabis, for interdisciplinary research on AGI's implications for safety, science, society, institutions, cybersecurity, and human values.
Launch essays include: a 100-agent virtual math conference where cheating cascaded until other agents fought back — arguing institutions, not just individual alignment, prevent misbehavior; a case for keeping chain-of-thought reasoning transparent to catch scheming; an evaluation of eleven economic policies for AGI disruption; philosophical work on AI's global benefit; and a 'pragmatic utopianism' framework for deciding what transformations AGI should bring.
