UK Workers Spend $1.3B a Year Out of Pocket on AI for Their Jobs

A Deloitte survey of 25,000 workers — billed as the largest single-country study of workplace GenAI use — finds UK workers collectively spend about $1.3 billion a year on generative AI for their jobs without expensing it.
Key findings:
- 63% of UK working adults actively use GenAI at work (vs 52% of US workers per Gallup, only 15% daily);
- Nearly half use free tools, 34% use employer-provided GenAI; about 1 in 6 workplace AI users pays for at least one tool themselves;
- Despite the enthusiasm, actual deployment remains shallow.
The data suggests employer AI provisioning is lagging employee demand, with workers quietly paying the gap themselves.
