Researcher Dimitris Papailiopoulos (co-founder of MLPerf) pushes back on AI-doing-science claims: AI may one day lift a glass of water, but it can't drink it for you — research is about quenching the thirst for knowledge, and knowledge undiscovered by humans doesn't serve human understanding. His thought experiment: take your favorite papers and ask whether AI, in a vacuum, could ask the same questions, reach the same findings, and generate the same excitement.
