Meta researcher Dimitris Papail argues AI may one day "lift a glass of water" but can't drink it for you — research stems from a thirst for knowledge, and knowledge undiscovered by humans is useless to human understanding. He suggests taking your favorite papers and asking whether AI could have posed the same questions. He also notes the immense human and system friction in "doing research" makes it far more than asking, answering, and writing a PDF.
