Deskworlds open-sources three cursor-reactive 3D underwater desktop worlds
chaseleantj · x · 2026-09-27
The developer behind the viral betta fish wallpaper open-sourced deskworlds (292 GitHub stars), turning desktop wallpapers into living 3D scenes.
- Three underwater scenes: Riverbed (a school of fish competing for food), Coral Reef (clownfish and cleaner shrimp), and Betta (a halfmoon betta on black)
- Rendered live with Three.js and WebGL2, all scenes react to the cursor
- Runs fully locally with no account or internet; wallpaper mode is macOS 13+ only (needs Xcode CLI tools), but all three also run in a browser
- The Mac app remembers your chosen world from its menu
