OpenAI Says 80-90% of Research Already Targets GPT-7 and Beyond

Boris Power, OpenAI's Head of Applied Research, told The Decoder that 80-90% of the company's research effort is already aimed at GPT-7, GPT-8, and beyond, with within-generation improvements treated as deliberate short-term bets.
Notably, Power doesn't see model performance as the biggest problem: most users simply don't know what they can do with AI. OpenAI's bottleneck, in his view, is shifting from capability to user awareness.
The remarks confirm OpenAI is developing several future generations in parallel while its product org works on getting existing capabilities into more hands.
