antirez ports Another World intro to ZX Spectrum 48k with a real Z80 VM
antirez · x · 2026-09-27
antirez (Salvatore Sanfilippo) has completed a full Another World intro demo for the ZX Spectrum 48k, running in real time on real hardware.
- Built on a genuine VM implemented for the Z80, executing the game's bytecode in real time
- "Full" means squeezing everything—buffers, the VM itself, polygon data, bytecode—into the 48k Spectrum, which required many tricks
- The music was an impressive 1-bit, 4-channel rendition (very recognizable) but had to be cut for being too slow
- Code, including the Z80 source, will be released soon; he credits original creator Éric Chahi
