Alibaba DAMO Academy, with the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, released DAMO RADAR, a general medical imaging model published in Science and open-sourced.
- Evaluated on nearly 40,000 systematic abdominal contrast-enhanced CT exams, covering 18 anatomical structures and 146 clinical imaging findings
- Achieves an average AUC of 0.913, claimed as the first general medical imaging model to reach radiologist expert level
- Moves beyond task-specific models (lung nodules, diabetic retinopathy) toward comprehensive multi-organ reads with coexisting abnormalities
The post notes that a decade after Hinton's prediction, the radiologist shortage remains real.
