Consciousness Debate: Author Argues 99.9% Confidence LLMs Aren't Conscious Is 'Insane'
burny_tech · x · 2026-09-27
Continuing the debate around the Digital Consciousness Model paper, the author argues you can't confidently deny LLM consciousness any more easily than octopus consciousness: both are systems whose behavior partially resembles ours, and we don't know under what conditions consciousness arises. His stance: credence should rise with behavioral complexity and consciousness-relevant functions. He guesses octopi are conscious, current LLMs probably aren't, and insects are uncertain—but calls 99.9%+ confidence against LLM consciousness insane when leading theories don't rule it out.
