Hugging Face engineer Quentin Gallouédec published "The Road to Open Source Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions," arguing that AI agents make contributing to open source trivially easy — and that's exactly the problem.
- The natural filter is gone: a reported bug used to signal real user demand, because someone had to spend time finding it. Agents can now surface dozens of technically valid issues in minutes, burying genuine needs under noise.
- Harmful at scale: he explicitly warns people against dumping 2,000 PRs a month into projects they don't understand to farm their GitHub profile — a jab at @poteto's "2,500 PRs to production last month" talk.
- Drawing on six years of maintaining large OSS projects, he says the real cost lies in review surface area: every technically-correct fix still consumes maintainer attention.
