Lightspeed partner after a year of AI assistant research: families, not individuals, are the ideal customer
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-09-27
Lightspeed India partner Harsha Kumar published a long-form essay distilling a year of meetings with AI assistant founders, alongside an updated market map that adds several India-based companies.
Market heat:
- Instinct's valuation jumped from $50M in April to $2.5B by August
- Town is reportedly raising at around $1B
- India's M raised ₹102 Cr ($12M) pre-product; Equal AI reports 1M monthly users on call screening alone
Key theses:
- The assistant is the obvious first product once models can act, and the space has become extremely crowded in six months
- The essay maps where moats do and don't exist, which wedges fit India, and argues the family—rather than the individual—is the ideal customer: even Tier-1 Indian households with drivers, cooks and 10-minute deliveries still find coordinating 10 people daily painful, like a CEO's never-ending job
- He also asks why such a product didn't come out of India first, and whether an "Instinct for India" might be the Instinct for the world
