Claude Code reverse-engineers and patches three US N64 ROM hacks to run on PAL consoles
RecordingTechnical86 · reddit · 2026-09-27
Given a folder of three US-only N64 ROM hacks and a one-line prompt, Claude Code did a full reverse-engineering port to PAL consoles: disassembled with Capstone to fix video mode fallback to Brazilian M-PAL, patched PAL timings from Nintendo's own tables, ported official EU audio settings for 50Hz, fixed Mario Kart's race clock running 17% slow at 50Hz, removed Smash Remix's region-lock infinite loop plus a creeping video-timing bug, rebuilt boot checksums, produced PAL50/PAL60 builds, and verified everything by playing real 4-player matches in the ares emulator via its debug port. It shipped a repeatable palpatch.py that verifies original bytes before each patch.
