Shopping is now the #3 AI use case, but only 16% let AI complete the purchase

Epsilon research puts shopping as the third-leading consumer AI application: 42% of shoppers use AI to compare prices, but only 16% let it finalize a purchase. That 26-point gap is the entire agentic-commerce opportunity — consumers trust AI to think about purchases, not to execute them.
The economics are showing up: Shopify says AI-driven traffic to merchants grew 8x YoY in Q1 2026, orders from AI-powered searches grew nearly 13x, and new buyers via AI channels placed orders at 2x the rate of other channels. That's why Shopify happily connects Shop Pay into Meta's Muse, while Amazon deliberately blocks outside agents (including ChatGPT) and pushes its own Rufus — an external agent could weaken Amazon's control over discovery, recommendations and advertising.
