NJ fines Microsoft-linked AI datacenter $1.07M over 62 unpermitted gas generators

New Jersey's DEP fined DataOne $1.07M — the state's largest-ever enforcement action against a datacenter. A July 29 inspection found 62 unpermitted natural-gas generators; a Floodlight thermal-drone investigation later showed at least 45 running simultaneously.
DataOne disputes the state's temporary-generator determination but says it will seek permits, with permanent onsite power planned around Bloom Energy fuel cells. The facility supplies AI compute to Microsoft via a $17bn deal with Dutch infrastructure giant Nebius.
