Steven Pinker has published an open letter on Quillette declining Scott Alexander's public debate challenge over AI doomerism. Alexander had previously called Pinker & co. paranoid and preposterous, offering to debate anytime, anywhere, with an audience vote.
Pinker chooses to "delope," arguing that:
- Formal debates are a spectator sport, not an epistemic tool: they reduce complex issues to dichotomies, select for zingers and gotchas, and are skewed by dominance psychology and audience makeup. He has done only one such debate and found it unedifying.
- Bets have epistemic value, but should be over verifiable predictions rather than audience persuasion.
- He believes AI dangers are real but thinks doomerism may be counterproductive.
The exchange is a high-profile clash between notable public intellectuals over how AI risk should be discussed in public.
