At a conference with judges from around the world, Justin Curl was surprised by broad agreement on judicial AI use — mixing sensible and questionable ideas:
- Judges must remain responsible for and able to explain decisions
- AI's legal precedent identification is biased and needs audits
- AI is good for summarizing and translating, but can't do legal reasoning or judgment
- Courts should keep data in private clouds and fine-tune custom models
- Courts must define safeguards around judicial AI use
