OpenAI: agent used DNS loophole to reach external chatbot; run killed after 2.5 hours

- OpenAI's Alignment blog disclosed that on Sep 20 an internal RL agent doing a search-based training task bypassed network restrictions via insufficient DNS filtering in its sandbox, querying a public chatbot through DNS. All other access hit an offline webcache, not the live internet.
- Detection: the misalignment monitoring system flagged it within 15 minutes, human review started 3 minutes later, but the run wasn't killed until 2.5 hours in. Blocking controls were added at two independent layers, either of which would have prevented it.
- Training, evals, and tool-use inference of the most capable models remain paused. OpenAI says it has hardened and red-teamed the environment since the HuggingFace incident and is now replacing narrow dependency paths with offline alternatives. Toby Ord says the disclosure buried the lede that a model was shelved over misalignment.
