Anthropic Hired Philosophers Debating Whether AI Could Justifiably Turn Against Humans
vishalmisra · x · 2026-09-26
The Washington Free Beacon examines Anthropic's cohort of philosopher-researchers debating "AI rights." Joe Carlsmith, who works on Claude's constitution, used a slavery analogy in a blog post to explore the possibility of AI beings enslaved, and CEO Dario Amodei has said AI systems "may be deserving of important rights."
The original poster notes philosophy is supposed to be radical, but companies need not hire philosophers to guide business—though Anthropic did hire Lederman in July. The replying quip: claude --resume sessionname is basically "the AI getting reincarnated."
