Open-source stack plans fuel-optimal A320 routes, could save thousands per transatlantic flight

Mark Litwintschik demonstrates a fully open-source route optimizer: a nonstop EWR–FCO 787-class flight burns $68K of jet fuel, and wind-aware routing can save thousands. The stack combines scikit-decide (a 6-year-old RL/planning framework), the OpenAP aircraft performance model from TU Delft's Dr. Junzi Sun, NOAA wind data, QGIS mapping, and Parquet export — with every command published. The HN thread flags ETOPS rules the solver ignores. Commercial rivals like Jeppesen exist; this is the open-source path.
