World Bank President: Small Language Models May Matter More Than Frontier LLMs in Developing World

Highlights from Columbia's World Leaders Forum on AI + Culture: World Bank President Ajay Banga cited a striking example from Uttar Pradesh, India — an illiterate woman could point her phone at a diseased leaf, identify the disease, locate nearby pesticide, and pay via UPI, all within an hour. He called it "science fiction, and unbelievable progress."
On jobs, Banga argued that purpose-built small language models may matter more in the developing world than frontier LLMs. But he warned that 1.2 billion people will come of age in the next 15 years against only 400 million jobs. "We can be wrong — no offense to economists — but not 800 million wrong."
