Anthropic says Claude cracked nine-loop particle physics calculation, beating the eight-loop record

AlexTensor · x · 2026-09-26

Anthropic's science blog reports Claude completed a nine-loop scattering amplitude calculation in planar N=4 super-Yang-Mills—a notoriously hard particle physics problem where each added loop increases precision at exponential cost, and most work stops at two or three loops. The previous eight-loop record was set by SLAC's Lance Dixon and collaborators.

Physicist Kyle Cranmer revealed the backstory: collaborator Lance Dixon was under an NDA while confirming the result, and the team had spent months using agentic AI tools like Claude Code to assist a problem they'd worked on for years.
