AI referrals hide as direct traffic: stop optimizing for clicks, start optimizing for mentions
nikvassev · x · 2026-09-26
nikvassev argues that when an AI engine names your brand as the answer—no link involved—the buyer decides inside the answer, then searches your name, and shows up in analytics as "direct." The AI never appears in the referrer, just a person who already trusts you. Measuring AI visibility by referral sessions therefore captures the smallest layer and misses the one that pays: brands should stop optimizing for the click and start optimizing for the mention.
