LeCun amplifies 2024 testimony warning AI 'regulatory panic' could restrict speech and research

Yann LeCun shared a rebuttal to Sen. Mark Warner's push for urgent AI regulation, resurfacing Feb. 2024 congressional testimony from free-speech advocate Greg Lukianoff. Lukianoff argued the biggest government threat around AI is regulatory overreach: a "regulatory panic" could let a few Americans decide for everyone what speech, ideas, and even questions are permitted in the name of safety or alignment. The clip is being recirculated just as Warner heads to the Senate floor to force a vote on AI guardrails.
