EU's top AI adviser: stop chasing US and China frontier models, fix productivity instead

POLITICO exclusive: Jim Hagemann Snabe, the European Commission's new special envoy for industrial AI, told the bloc's 27 commissioners at a Sept. 4 seminar that the EU should focus less on winning the frontier-model race and more on deploying AI to reverse sluggish productivity across health, agriculture, transport, defense and manufacturing. This aligns with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's State of the Union line that Europe should "be the ones who draw the greatest value from it" while managing its dangers. Snabe, appointed in July, advises von der Leyen and EVP Henna Virkkunen on industrial AI strategy.
