Blaise Agüera y Arcas' book "What Is Intelligence?" (MIT Press) is now available in paperback, e-book, online, and audiobook (read by the author).
The book argues that LLMs producing general intelligence by next-word prediction fits the predictive-brain hypothesis — that prediction underlies not just intelligence and the brain but life itself. It builds a unified picture spanning computation in living systems, evolutionary and social origins of intelligence, models vs. reality, entropy and time, free will, consciousness, and machine ethics, and takes the contrarian stance that some modern AI systems do have a claim to intelligence, consciousness, and free will.
