OpenAI Confirms Paid User Can Permanently Lose Account Tied to Dead Email

A long-time paying ChatGPT user detailed a serious account-recovery deadlock on Reddit: he knows the correct email and password and is still logged in on his iPhone, but the attached legacy Comcast email is permanently closed, so web sign-in verification codes go nowhere.
Every recovery path failed:
- Billing info rejected: Support said subscription/payment records cannot verify ownership.
- Passkey blocked: Even inside the already-authenticated iPhone app, adding a security key requires a code sent to the dead email.
- Data export impossible: The iOS app directs users to the web for export; the Privacy Portal recognized his phone number but still demanded normal sign-in verification.
OpenAI Support confirmed: "At this time, we do not have a supported alternative verification process to replace an inaccessible account email or bypass the required email verification." Their recommendation — keep the iPhone session alive and export data — is itself unworkable, and they confirmed chat history and workspaces cannot be transferred to a new account.
The phone is effectively the only key to a paid account holding years of work. The poster is warning others and urging OpenAI to build a secure, high-friction ownership-recovery mechanism.
