The Sora API reached its shutdown date with OpenAI listing no replacement. @VraserX laments the loss and argues that once a company stops selling a model, it should release the weights so others can keep building.
Replying, shaunralston makes the strongest counterargument: irreversibility. Once weights are downloaded and guardrails stripped, a model can never be recalled — for major labs, retired frontier models are likely viewed as active liabilities rather than harmless artifacts, with competitive and societal risks outweighing the goodwill of giving them away.
