The Asymptote of the AI SOC Is Determinism: When Not to Use Agents

Security engineer Alex Beaver argues that the AI SOC hype misses the point: AI's real value is making deterministic automation cheaper to build. Runtime agents bring real benefits but carry high marginal compute costs and nondeterminism-related unreliability. In a mature AI SOC, AI handles tasks where ambiguity and generalization matter, while repeatable, high-volume execution moves into deterministic code. He offers a framework for deciding where AI expands a team's capabilities and where traditional engineering fits better, warning that many AI initiatives currently fail to deliver strong ROI.
