Stanford University published Virtual Biotech in Science: a multi-agent AI system that simulates an entire biotech R&D organization. A virtual chief scientific officer sits at the top, coordinating agents for target discovery, safety assessment, treatment selection, and clinical development, running 37,075 task instances in parallel.
The system targets the long-standing problem of target validation, which requires integrating human genetics, functional genomics, and clinical evidence scattered across databases and specialist teams. Rather than a real company, it's a scalable simulation of an AI-organized R&D pipeline, illustrating a new organizational paradigm for AI in drug discovery.
