Companies Swapping Coding Agents for Mid-Size Open Models on Cost, Privacy Grounds

Responding to why an average company would self-host large-model inference, nirbenz argues that even if official benchmarks overstate them, open models in the mid tier (Sonnet-class) are far cheaper, and self-hosting them has gotten much easier in recent months. More companies are replacing their coding agents with such models, driven by security and privacy concerns.
He also sees rising demand for small models (Gemma, 27B Qwen) that can serve realtime use cases on simple tasks; image and video models are even smaller and fit the same logic.
