Debate: is "LLMs just manipulate numbers" a serious argument against AI writing?

The thread began with @davetroy arguing that human writers have an ethical duty to be correct, while computer programs "do not think or feel" and merely manipulate numbers. @austinc3301 pushed back, calling this a naive view of reductionism: the brain can likewise be reduced to electrochemical impulses without its high-level behavior becoming less interesting.
