AP Stylebook bans anthropomorphizing AI; researchers push back on certainty

AP Stylebook guidance says AI systems "do not think, feel, want or understand" and urges journalists to avoid anthropomorphizing language, instead explaining what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who is affected.
Former Meta researcher kanair pushed back: he doesn't necessarily believe AI systems have subjective experience, but "I don't understand how anyone can be certain that they don't. Nobody knows what makes consciousness." A crisp collision between media style rules and the open question of machine consciousness.
