Sakana AI brings on Jürgen Schmidhuber as Chief Scientific Advisor to pursue recursive self-improvement

Sakana AI announced that Jürgen Schmidhuber, often called a father of modern AI, has joined as Chief Scientific Advisor.
- The company says it has spent two years building foundations for autonomous R&D: LLM² (AI inventing optimization algorithms), Darwin Gödel Machine (agents rewriting their own codebase to double performance), ShinkaEvolve (sample-efficient program evolution), ALE-Agent (self-learning agents beating hundreds of human experts), Digital Red Queen (open-ended adversarial coevolution), and The AI Scientist (published in Nature).
- These are now unified under one mission: open-ended, adaptive architectures that collectively self-improve.
- Rationale: human intelligence emerged from open-ended evolution under strict constraints, and the same principle should apply to AI. The company announced an RSI Lab earlier this year.
