TTIC launches LEIF Lab to study Transformer expressivity via formal language theory

The Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago has launched the LEIF Lab (Language, Expressivity, Interpretability, and Formalism), an interdisciplinary group studying the computational power of transformers through formal language theory — using automata, logic, and circuit complexity to demystify LLMs and guide principled improvements to architectures.
