C5 says it built a research facility run entirely by AI in 12 weeks, with AI designing, executing and observing experiments end-to-end across biology, chemistry and materials science. It launched SciUniverse, a benchmark measuring AI's ability to do real-world scientific research. Ramez Naam's commentary: AI is limited by training data, which in physical science means experiments and instruments — breakthroughs won't come from thinking alone, but maybe from automating physical science.
