Google to launch first Big Tech satellite testing AI data centers in space next week

Per the New York Times, Google will send a refrigerator-size experimental satellite into orbit next Thursday with enough compute to answer simple AI queries from space — Big Tech's first concrete step toward orbital AI data centers.
Built by Planet Labs for Google, the satellite already passed vibration testing in a San Francisco clean room, with technicians marking each screw to detect loosening. The mission will validate in-orbit inference powered by solar panels and space heat dissipation.
