OpenAI, Google and Anthropic reportedly building SAFA, a frontier AI safety standards body
steph_palazzolo · x · 2026-09-25
Per The Information's Leo Schwartz and Stephanie Palazzolo, Google, OpenAI and Anthropic are forming a safety body tentatively called the Standards Authority for Frontier AI (SAFA), aiming to launch by end of year or early next.
Key details:
- Former White House AI adviser Sriram Krishnan was approached for CEO; David Friedberg and Condoleezza Rice were considered for chair
- Active internal debate over whether SAFA should conduct model testing itself, amid resource concerns around CAISI
- After a FINRA-like effort stalled in the White House, SAFA would proceed independently first, with hopes for a public-private partnership later
- Could partner with the Frontier Model Forum
- Widespread industry skepticism from outside the three companies
