François Chollet weighs in on AI consciousness: at some point in evolutionary history, matter learned to feel, and we don't know how — so it wouldn't be scientific to dismiss the possibility it could happen again. That said, he doesn't believe current AI systems are sentient, as they lack the characteristics he'd expect in a sentient agent.
