Sunbird AI's open Sunflower v2 spans 67 African languages, beats GPT and Claude on most

Uganda's Sunbird AI released Sunflower v2, expanding its open African-language AI suite from 31 Ugandan languages to 67 across the continent. The five open models (all on Hugging Face, built on Qwen) include a 27B LLM that ranks second on the Sahara African-language benchmark — ahead of all Claude and GPT models — a 9B model, speech recognition covering 51 languages, TTS in 20, and a lightweight model that runs offline on mid-range phones. All models and datasets are freely available.
