UK regulator proposes ChatGPT and Perplexity choice screens on Android and Chrome

The UK competition regulator has proposed that Google offer ChatGPT and Perplexity as search options on Android and Chrome. The plan includes a choice screen at initial device/browser setup with an annual re-prompt; AI assistants would qualify if they meet technical and security requirements, and providers must clearly credit their answer sources.
It remains a proposal with a decision expected by year-end, but the signal is clear: AI assistants are now competing with Google Search for the default.
