Meta's Muse hits 2.8M installs in 12 days: AI agents thrive on US friction, not China's

Meta's AI personal assistant Muse hit 2.8M installs in 12 days with 642K US mobile DAUs, topping the US App Store free chart and out-downloading ChatGPT. Analysis of 654 public use cases (FUNDA) shows 19.6% were saving money/refunds: users had it negotiate an AT&T broadband bill from $85/500Mbps to $40/1Gbps, cut Verizon Fios from $134 to $64, and switch streaming services by NFL schedule ($310 to $181/season). 49 quantifiable cases totaled $35,426 in annualized savings (mean $723, median $490); 62.8% of cases were "Life Admin."

The piece argues Muse works in the US because friction costs are high (siloed systems, fax-bound processes) while China's super-apps already eliminated that friction, and because Muse (which runs on a cloud VM) benefits from open APIs (Gmail OAuth, Expedia, Shopify, Stripe) and full web availability. But sustainability is doubtful: savings are one-time stock harvesting, and Amazon has already started restricting Muse's access. The author predicts US openness will be re-evaluated in the agent era and may converge toward China-style closed ecosystems.
