Gartner: 41% of CISOs hit by deepfake voice social engineering in past 12 months

Help Net Security rounds up the latest deepfake numbers: per Gartner, 41% of CISOs reported at least one social engineering incident involving a deepfake on an employee audio call in the past 12 months, and 36% the same for video calls. Meanwhile 79% reported phishing/BEC incidents and 58% vishing or smishing. The survey covered 297 senior security leaders (March–May 2026). Gartner's Craig Porter says attackers combine phishing, BEC, synthetic media and aggregated personal context across channels, and recommends making verification—not spotting fakes—the default, with phishing-resistant auth on recovery, privileged access, and payment workflows.
