The author contrasts frontier AI progress (agent research at OpenAI and Anthropic) with reality inside legacy businesses: a meeting where "creating Copilot agents" meant a template plus a simple prompt to summarize documents. He likens it to the never-quite-arrived paperless office and a family doctor practice that stores records digitally yet still hand-copies them onto paper, doing everything twice.
Key argument: absent AI benefits across much of the economy doesn't mean benefits don't exist, for three reasons: cost is still too high for many uses; hallucination rates, though much reduced, remain an obstacle; and cultural distrust of the new thing, much like early distrust of the cloud.
